Crow Eating the Eye of a Salmon

Oct 1, 2015 | Corvids, Salmon

  • The Northwestern Crow actually helps prepare salmon carcasses for insects by providing an area in which they can lay their eggs.
  • Insects, such as blow flies, can now enter the eye socket.
  • Eventually their larvae, called maggots, can begin the process of eating the carcass and providing nutrients to the stream and food for other creatures.
  • To learn about this process look at the video http://www.naturebob.com/salmon-and-blow-flies-alaska
  • This video provides more information on the importance of this process http://www.naturebob.com/northwestern-crows-eating-maggots-salmon-carcass
