- Diving ducks have feet set far back on their body and must balance in an awkward fashion when walking. They feed underwater and can dive to depths of a hundred feet or more in search of food. These ducks patter across the water in a long takeoff run before becoming air-borne. Nineteen species occur in Alaska.
