Gulls Really Like Salmon Eggs
Aug 23, 2015 | Birds, Gulls
- This video shows some of the many ways that gulls obtain salmon eggs in Alaska.
- When digging nests salmon usually dislodge eggs from previous spawners.
- Also, if the female is not able to cover the eggs immediately, some will wash out of the nest at spawning.
- These drifting eggs eventually die and develop fungus.
- These eggs if not eaten could infect the live eggs living in the gravel.
- Hence the gulls are doing a good service by cleaning up the loose eggs in a stream.
