- Hemlock-parsley is important for is a film that documents blow flies feeding on the flowers nectar and bears digging up the roots.
- Hemlock-parsley Conioselinum pacificum is a member of the Carrot Family (Apiaceae).
- It is a common plant along our gravelly beaches, sandy shores and upper tidal marshes.
- It may be a very important source of nectar for blow flies. These flies are one of the most important insects in Alaska. They lay their eggs on and in salmon carcasses and the resulting larvae called maggots feed on the carcasses and help provide nutrients to our salmon streams. In addition lots of birds, especially juveniles, feed on the maggots.
- The roots of this plant may provide important food for bears prior to hibernation. Especially in years of low salmon and berries.
- Special thanks to Doug Jones for the aerial view of the area being dug up by bears.
- This video could be used as an example of the importance of certain plants in Alaska. Feel free to download it and modifiy it however you wish.
