• Hooded Merganser Feeds on Northern Case Maker Caddisflies shows a female merganser feeding amongst buckbean at a pond near Mendenhall Glacier in early November.
  • It stayed in the pond for several days and seemed to be quite successful getting these insects.
  • The caddisflies appeared to be on the vegetation fairly close to the water surface.
  • For information about this insect look at  https://www.naturebob.com/sites/default/files/AquaticInsects.pdf and go to page 42.
  • Special thanks to John Hudson for sampling the area where the merganser was feeding which helped determine the most likely species of insect the bird was feeding on.
