Insects on Elderberry Plants

Jul 14, 2019 | Uncategorized

  • Insects on Elderberry Plants shows some of the insects I have seen in Juneau coming to the flowers and leaves. These photos were taken in 2019.
  • I expected to see huge numbers of insects coming to the flowers and was surprised at how few visited the flowers. I spent many hours looking at the flowers over several days at both sea level and alpine.
  • In a very detailed report about these plants they reported: “The number of species of phytophagous insects associated with various shrubs and small trees was reported by Duffey et al. (1974). A total of 19 species was recorded on Sambucus nigra. This was a relatively
    small number”
  • For fascinating information about these plants look at Sambucus nigra L. by  MARK D. ATKINSON† and ELAINE ATKINSON
