• Squirrels like Mushrooms shows a Red Squirrel harvesting in the video part probably Russula emetica the next mushroom appears to be Amanita regalis both of these mushrooms are considered to be poisonous to humans.
  • For information about squirrels eating poisonous mushrooms look at this article by Ned Rozell http://www.sitnews.us/0907news/090607/090607_ak_science.html
  • Also look at this article /sites/default/files/Red%20Squirrel%20as%20a%20Mycophagist.pdf which states The Red Squirrel feeds on the seeds of fir-cones, nuts, etc ., but it is also an habitual consumer of fungus (a mycophagist). In the autumn, it often collects fleshy fungi in large numbers for its winter supply of food and it stores the fungi sometimes in holes and sometimes on the branches of trees . This latter mode of storage, although of peculiar interest, does not seem to be generally known to mycologists even in North America.
  • A great review of this subject can be found in this publication /sites/default/files/Fungus%20Consumption%20%28Mycophagy%29%20by%20Small%20Animals.pdf here they mention Tamiascisows hudsonicus (red squirrel) has been credited with eating 89 species of fungi, more than any other mycophagist.
