- Red-breasted Mergansers eating Sculpins shows both the male and female eating a sculpin.
- I have seen this quite a bit and I suspect most of the ones they are eating are the Staghorn Sculpins.
- These sculpins have “sharp horns” that make them very difficult to swallow.
- So the mergansers have to try to subdue them before attempting to swallow the sculpins.
